These chairs are based on those pioneered by California woodworker, Sam Maloof; the original appears in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. They feature a fluid style of motion, with joinery that gracefully joins pieces together. Johnathon Fairbanks, of the Boston Museum, described the original with this: "Perhaps the hallmark of the chair is the half-lap joint, exposed where the legs meet the seat. This is a complex tongue and groove joint, which follows the contour of the chair surface. Structurally sound and visually appealing, this joint artfully provides detail at the point of transition."

The chair represents a style within the American Crafts Furniture Movement, but this is what Sam Maloof told David during an interview for Woodworking International Magazine in 1989: "I was told my work was Egyptian influenced, but I didn't know a thing about Egyptian art. I'd also read that I was influenced by Scandinavian furniture. But I started making furniture in 1945, before Scandinavian furniture really made a big hit in this country."

David has been making his own version of this chair for over ten years. "Rocking chairs represent the epitome of fine woodworking. Whereas most furniture owes its allegiance to classic styles of the past, this chair revolutionizes design, ergonomics, and joinery with a new look and feel for the present." Only a few woodworkers have mastered the skill that this masterpiece requires.

Each one of David's chairs is individually hand-crafted with a keen eye for detail. Your chair will be signed and dated, and accompanied by a Certificate of Authentication. It is a masterpiece that will increase in value with age, an heirloom for your family long after your grandchildren pass it on to their grandchildren.

The dark-colored chair seen here is made of Oregon black walnut, with a richness of color that is best appreciated in person. The joints are accented with purple heart, and a maple stripe highlights the runner. The light-colored chair is made of a beautifully figured maple, hand-selected for the colors that are unique in this piece. Each chair is accented with purple heart at the joints, and a contrasting walnut stripe along the runner.

Other species are available upon request.
